Vicarage Park is an innovative school located in Stottesdon, a small village near Kidderminster. We are a small special school, which provides a personalised education for up to 12 pupils aged 8-18 with severe complexity of needs, primarily learning disabilities but also associated health or physical disabilities, and other behaviours which challenge.
Despite being a secondary provision, we require a SEN teacher who is versatile and can teach across a range of curriculum subjects from primary to GCSE. Accordingly, this role will suit a primary or secondary trained teacher.
Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Many will also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.
The work we do is both varied and challenging and, as a trauma and attachment informed organisation, all staff are provided with extensive therapeutic training and support.
Our closely triangulated approach places the child at the centre of decision making, ensuring that education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, our students can work together to secure outstanding outcomes for all.
The Role
We are seeking a passionate, creative, and resilient teacher with experience or interest in working with pupils with PMLD/SLD in a therapeutic, multidisciplinary setting. You will deliver personalised and holistic learning experiences that recognise the unique abilities of each child, underpinned by sensory integration, therapeutic approaches and trauma-informed practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver an engaging, differentiated curriculum that meets the sensory, cognitive, and emotional needs of learners.
- Work collaboratively with in-house therapists (e.g. speech and language, occupational therapy) to embed therapeutic strategies into daily teaching.
- Use a total communication approach, including symbols, Makaton, AAC, and sensory supports.
- Maintain detailed records of progress using EHCP targets and personalised learning goals.
- Support pupils in managing sensory regulation, anxiety and behaviours that challenge using positive behaviour support plans.
- Contribute to a trauma-informed school culture where safety, empathy, and relationships are central.
- Lead and manage support staff within your class team effectively.
Essential Criteria:
- Experience working with children with SEND, particularly SLD/PMLD
- Understanding of sensory and communication needs and therapeutic approaches
- Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Reflective practice and commitment to ongoing professional development
