About The Role

Compass Community is a values-led organisation committed to making a difference in the lives of children and young people across the UK. With a focus on care, education, fostering and therapeutic services, we are passionate about delivering transformational change and creating safe, supportive environments. As part of our ongoing mission to strengthen our Data Protection posture, we are looking for an experienced Data Protection Officer to join our dynamic Programme and Project Management team.

The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to take the lead in ensuring compliance with UK data protection legislation and safeguarding best practices. This is a pivotal role in protecting sensitive personal data related to children, families, and staff, and embedding a culture of privacy and confidentiality across the organisation.

You will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and work closely with teams across Compass, including Fostering, Education, Residential, Therapeutic Services, Compliance, IT, HR, and frontline services, to drive privacy-by-design and data protection excellence. National travel will be required in line with business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain data protection policies and procedures.
  • Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
  • Serve as the main point of contact for data subjects, local authorities, and the ICO.
  • Deliver training to staff and carers on safe data handling.
  • Manage data breaches and ensure appropriate risk mitigation.
  • Oversee records of processing activities in line with legal and safeguarding requirements.
  • Review and manage Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) with third parties.
  • Support fulfilment of Subject Access Requests (SARs).
  • Embed privacy into the design of IT systems and operational practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Deep understanding of UK data protection law, especially relating to children and vulnerable people.
  • Excellent communication and training delivery skills.
  • High ethical standards, empathy, and confidentiality.
  • Strong risk management and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive data in complex environments.
  • Relevant qualification in law, governance, or compliance (CIPP/E, CIPM, or BCS highly desirable).
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a DPO or similar role.
  • Experience in childcare, education, or a safeguarding-related sector.
  • Familiarity with handling DPIAs, SARs, audits, and child welfare legislation.

Why Join Compass Community?

  • Play a direct role in improving services that support vulnerable children and families.
  • Be part of a forward-thinking digital team that values innovation, efficiency, and social impact.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for personal growth, training, and professional development.
  • Flexible, supportive working environment.
