Central to this is the Compass Curriculum: an inclusive, research-informed and values-led curriculum designed specifically for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), from Reception through to Post-16.
We are seeking an exceptional National English Consultant to work alongside the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Assessment to lead the development and implementation of English across Compass schools. This is a non class-based, national leadership role, focused on curriculum excellence, reading culture, staff development and sustainable impact at scale, while continuing to model outstanding practice within school settings.
As National English Consultant, you will provide strategic leadership for English and reading across Compass schools, ensuring a consistent, inclusive and ambitious approach for all learners.
Strategic & Educational Leadership
- Design, develop and lead the Compass English curriculum across all schools
- Support the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Assessment to develop the wider Compass Curriculum, embedding Compass values and current educational research
- Lead a Compass-wide approach to reading, promoting reading across the curriculum and supporting pupils’ literacy development at every stage
- Model excellent, inclusive classroom practice across schools (without responsibility for a permanent class)
- Support staff through coaching, feedback, observation and the introduction of new initiatives
- Contribute to cross-curricular curriculum development and learning opportunities
Operational Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Maintain strategic oversight of pupil progress and attainment in English across Compass schools
- Lead data dialogue meetings focused on pupil potential, progress and outcomes
- Drive quality assurance within English, including:
- Data analysis
- Lesson observations
- Planning scrutiny
- Work and book reviews
People, Culture & Leadership
- Support staff to deliver a consistent, sequential approach to English teaching and learning
- Lead subject-specific CPD and training across Compass schools
- Support procurement of high-quality English and reading resources
- Mentor staff, including those undertaking teacher training programmes, fostering:
- Collaboration
- High expectations
- Continuous professional learning
- Actively model the behaviours and expectations of the Compass Culture House, building trust and psychological safety across teams
Growth & Strategic Planning
- Support new and existing schools to adapt and implement the English curriculum for diverse cohorts
- Use performance data and educational research to inform long-term curriculum planning and development
Who We’re Looking For
Qualifications
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Postgraduate qualification in Education, SEND or Leadership (desirable)
Experience
- Curriculum and assessment leadership experience, ideally within SEND or specialist education
- Demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching
- Experience delivering CPD, coaching or professional learning
